Today in Literacy, we did persuasive writing with Miss. Armocida. We got into group of fours, and tried to continue Miss. Armocida’s writing. Which was: Classes Should Be Held Outside. I got Panashe, Maddy O and Christian. We had to figure out which statement best fit the main starting reason/topic. I found this lesson pretty good. There were glues in the statements that helped us figure out which one goes where. So i found this Literacy lesson good! 🙂

For literacy, we have been focusing on fractured fairy tales and rewriting our own fractured fairy tales. I learnt that fractured fairy tales are a funny or weirder version of the original fairy tale. You can can change the characters role or name. You can also change the setting and maybe add more characters.

For literacy this term, we are starting Literature Circles. In Literature Circles, we have a few different groups and each group has a different book to another group. We each have different roles in every group. For example: Summarizar, Illustrator, Dissusion Director, Travel Tracker, Word Wizard and Connector. We do our roles based on the section of text that we read. We then share our role with our group and talk about it.

Today in Literacy, we got to choose what book we would like to read for Literature Circles next week and it makes it easier for the teachers to choose our groups. I chose: No Gun For Asmir, Millions and How To Live Forever. Last year I read: A Horse Called Elvis and Bird & SugarBoy. I choses these books because, last year I really wanted to read them, but I didnt get choosen for any of the books for the groups.

For literacy, we are still focusing on our Literature Circles and the roles. The roles will help me to understand the text that i’m reading because it will make me think about reading and what the story is saying. This morning, we worked together with my class mates to write a summary on a book call “The Happiest Refugee”. We worked together to write a summary of the story and this helps me to think more about what i’m going to add on to what my classmates had already put down, because I don’t want to repeat myself. Writing a summary will also help me to understand the text more and it will help with my paraphrasing skills. We also don’t want to add too much detailed because we are not telling the whole story, we are just explaining the important bits and the main parts.

We did some work on Reports and how its set out. We read a report and talked about it. We talked about the layout and the features. We talked about how there are ‘footnotes’ and how they are at the end of the page and the numbers tell us which sentence is was in. Reading a report and understanding a report is different because, when you’re reading a report, you understand the basic details. Understanding one is different. When you’re understanding the report, you are reading it will critical eyes and you’re noticing the small details that the writer has put into the report. For example: every report has a BIG BOLD heading and that every picrure or photo has a caption. If you were just reading it for entertainment, you wouldn’t notice how all the pictures has a caption, you wouldn’t notice how big the heading was and how it captured your attention and you wouldn’t understand deeply what the writer/reporter is trying to tell you.

Today we leant about “Card Stacking” in persuasive writing and how we have to stick to just one side, either going against the statment or with it. The Card Stacking strategy helps me to remember my reasons and statments and to just stick to one side of the issue.
